  • Although I write quite a bit about travel, food, books, business, and the media, I still consider myself a general assignment reporter and writer. I went freelance so that I could cover the world--no use limiting myself now.

    I'm a contributing editor for American Way, the American Airlines magazine, co-write Flyover America, and have also written for loads of other travel, food, book, and general interest magazines. I've also contributed to guidebooks for Michelin, Mobil Travel Guide, and MapQuest.

American Way: If These Walls Could Talk

Cover It's not unusual to see visitors to New York City--or even a local or two, when they remember to stop and smell the cement--looking up, taking in all the architectural sights the city has to offer. But on October 6 and 7, the fifth annual Open House New York Weekend will offer some relief for the neck strain: Instead of having to look up, architectural aficionados will be able to take a look deep inside hundreds of buildings and sites around the city.

American Way: Fill in the Blank

June15_1 There was all this empty space. Floors. Walls. The whole shebang. After 11 years in a (very) small Manhattan apartment, I had moved out to an outer borough and was now the proud renter of about 800 square feet of space. (I know, those of you outside the five boroughs are snickering over my idea of "space.")

Then the reading began.

It started with Apartment Therapy, and then a design*sponge grabbed hold, and then Treehugger, and it just kept going from there. I had become obsessed with the ever-expanding world of design blogs. All day long--though I had to take the occasional break to get some work done--I cruised the blogs, eager to see what these design-savvy folks had found. I fell for chairs. I found artists who could fill my wall space on the cheap. I was on the hunt for the perfect end table. Design magazines started to seem so…static. They didn't deliver the goods from morning until night. I wanted a personal design shopper--and now, thanks to the bloggers, I had an army of them.

Lexus.com: Floor Show
September 2004

Creating art was always Emma Gardner's passion. While pregnant with her first child, the former Web site editor and Litchfield, Connecticut, resident decided it was time to make it her business, too. She'd taken a textile design class years earlier and was intrigued by the idea of doing something in that arena. During the 12-week maternity leave from her editorial job, Gardner, 37, says she was "struck by" the urge to create area rugs.
