About Me

  • There are starting points both large and small for my articles and essays: my adopted home state of Alaska, travel, food, science, odd things people say to me, this, that, and, now and again the other thing. And, while doing research, I (inevitably) fall down a rabbit hole (for, at least, a short time) and the starting point of the day turns into three new interesting ideas for future pieces. Somehow, I make a living off of it. Not a bad way to work. I've written for publications including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Smithsonian, National Geographic Traveler, Every Day with Rachael Ray, Edible Alaska, BonAppetit.com, and Entrepreneur. Other recent projects include book chapters for National Geographic Books and Fodor's.

I'm also the host of Life (After Cancer), an honest (perhaps too honest) and often irreverent podcast for post-cancer types who think the "new normal" can go [bleep] itself. Cause life after cancer looks like your own life--but it's completely different. I finished up my own runaround with bad cells in April 2015 and though I kept expecting life to spring back to normal, it didn't. So now I'm talking about it and I want other cancer survivors in on the conversation too.

So, ready to put my curiosity, strong reporting skills, and wordplay to work for your publication? Send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.
