About Me...
I'm a freelance writer and, along with several notebooks, a thousand pens, a laptop, and some other writing gear, I always have a camera with me when I head out on the road for stories (or when I'm just wandering around). Some of my favorite photos are to the right. For more of my shots, click any of the photo albums in the far right column. And please visit often--I'll be posting new photos all the time. Questions or comments? Drop me a note.
Yes, Hawaii is really that beautiful. This is sunset on a beach in Napili, Maui. Ready for more? Here are photo albums of Moloka'i; Hana, Maui; and the west coast of Maui.
Parts of Ecuador's Cotopaxi National Park are a desolate moonscape, nothing but rock. Others are coated with tiny flowers that, for protection from the harsh elements, stay low to the ground. These purple flowers, called cholos, dotted sections of the park. The guide, Fernando, said they're delicious when cooked.
For about six months or so, I've been tracking the seasons and time of day from my kitchen window. I haven't been very organized about it and there are many times of day missing and some months that didn't get enough attention. With years ahead of me in this apartment, most likely, I plan to remedy those problems. There are some pain in the neck things about living in Queens but this view of the Manhattan skyline quashes all of them. After living with a view of the building across the street for 11 years, my current view is a big reward.
They've been playing Rolley-Hole marbles in the Monroe County, Kentucky
area for 150 years. I hung around with the guys for three days, played a game of Rolley-Hole (very badly), and learned a ton about whittling, flint, and what it means to clean the yard. See more photos.
Portage Glacier (12 miles out of Girdwood and about 50 miles out of Anchorage) was covered with snow--but this dog didn't mind. And the guys sailing massive kites--and paraskiing--couldn't have cared less either. And, well, neither did I.
The paparazzi went absolutely mad when Charlize Theron walked into the lobby of the Beverly Hilton for the Oscar nominees' luncheon. Hey Charlize! You look beautiful! Hey look over here! The flashes just kept going and going. One thing that struck me about this photo--which I took after a few of the paparazzi doing the shooting and before a flock of fans lined up to get a looksee at the stars, was how much Theron glowed--everybody else really did seem rather dull in comparison. It's so strange. She must use really good moisturizer.
Another spot way out in an outerborough. This time it's Brooklyn and the Salt Marsh Nature Center. While birds were hardly twittering away in the cold as all get out air, they were huddled in the water, just sort of waiting for it all to pass--but, like me, not unhappy to be away from busy busy for a few minutes.
Take the E and then the Q46 and then, there it is, a surprise of a farm. The Queens County Farm Museum is the oldest surviving farm in the state. It's surrounded by suburban homes. And in the middle of colorful chickens and geese making all kinds of noise and a huge hog that sounded like an old man who spends too much time by himself, there's a cow. A beautiful brown-eyed gentle cow.
I took a series of shots of my boots and, of all of them, this one was definitely my favorite. My apartment is a pretty peaceful place in the early evenings and, more so than any other shot I've taken here, the feeling in this picture reflects that. And it also features a few of my favorite things: those boots and the chairs.
